Día de Muertos

Since there’s no travelling right now I’ll try to catch up on the pictures I took last year. For October I was kindly given some tickets at work for the festival at the Kern County Museum so I persuaded some of my family to come check out the festivities.

The colorful costumes, makeup, dancing and singing made this a great event to attend. There were all sorts of vendors selling things as well including the traditional candy skulls. We agreed that we had a great time and we should attend again, before we headed for home.

Greenville in the fall

Feather river

I had time off work for Halloween this year and since my Parents were heading up to Greenville we decided to make it a big family get together. I had an enjoyable drive up the Feather river canyon and of course made a few stops on the way to admire the scenery and take a few pictures.  The season has been somewhat strange this year with sudden dips of cold followed by warm spells, so the fall colors weren’t as bright as in past years.

I made it to Greenville around midday and we had a pleasant afternoon catching up on family news. That evening we took my nephews to a Halloween carnival at the local school, Dad even dressed up as the mad hatter. He was surprised to see there were several people with hatter costumes as well!

The next day we headed out to Indian falls to join the folks at the Dawn center for some apple picking and cider pressing.  It was a fun event with music,  a wonderful potluck.  kids and dogs running through the orchard and a whole lot of apples getting squished.  We headed back to Greenville as the sun started to go down tired but happy.

Heart stopping good time

I hadn’t planned to visit a lot of haunts this year as I’m heading out of town for halloween, but when ric invited us to visit one his nephew was putting on at Madison and Manzanita I was happy to join the gang for a visit,  it wasn’t overly memorable though so I figured I still didn’t have much to write about. Then Tom called up to say he’d gotten invited to go for a visit to heartstoppers and a behind the scenes tour, how could I resist going along.

They had chosen a great location as the old mineshaft entertainment center had lots of space for their haunts, including an outdoor walk int the woods where we were stalked by zombies, a descent into the mine shafts to visit the side show, and travel through the badlands, and upstairs to the asylum.

We had a great time and enjoyed the behind the scenes our where we got to meet the actors and see various props in action.  It was a great visit and a lot of fun. and they let me out eventually.

Pumpkins!

Its that time of year again.  The time when folks go out in droves to hunt down that dangerous prey, the Halloween pumpkin! Of course this must only be done in a sincere pumpkin patch or the great pumpkin will not appear. My Brother and his family were in town for my nephews  dental  appointment so we headed out to Wheatland where we were sure to find a sincere pumpkin patch at Bishops farms.

This looked promising but after sizing up the pumpkin my sister in law had to let Michael know either the pumpkin could go home with them or he could, there just wasn’t room in the car for both so he’d need to select a smaller victim.

nephews, now wait a minute, how many nephews do I have again?

There was also all sorts of entertainment for the family, a train for the kids, live music, corn maze, sunflower labyrinth, slides etc.

I know I was pretty tired by the time we found more appropriately sized pumpkins and headed back to the cars but it was a fun day.

Haunted Castle Halloween

Another Halloween gone by. This year I heard of something new to check out so I asked Tom and Karole if they’d like to join me on a trip out to Ione, to see the Haunted Preston Castle.

Spooky tower

We started the evening with a wonderful dinner at Indian Oven.
Then we headed out to Ione. Driving through the dark we approached town and spied our first view of the Preston Castle. The building itself is pretty impressive, large stone walls with tall towers set on top a hill overlooking the town. Add to that the opportunity to tour it and walk through its halls in near darkness. It really was a spooktacular evening. They did the usual ‘haunt’ setups as well as some original ones but really it was the ambience of the location that truly made the evening. Between the old massive construction, crumbling walls, creaky floors and its varied history as a prison with more than one violent death during its recorded history. definitely an ideal Halloween haunt.
