This years Western Regional of the NSS was the regional that almost didn’t happen, I received word of registration a mere few days before the event! Still, since most cavers wait till the last minute to register for events anyway, perhaps it didn’t make that much difference.Ric and I headed up to Angels camp Saturday Morning hoping to make it in time for Kens talk on two rope rescue techniques. We feared we were going to be late after spending some time trying to locate the camping area. We had gone to the Calaveras fair ground as advertised but didn’t realize till after we’d gone back out to the road to get directions that we had to drive on around back through the RV park to get to the campground. We made it and Ken hadn’t started his talk so all was well. There were plenty of people in attendance and even more showed up as folks began to roll in from various cave trips. That night we had a good dinner put on by Kadean for the WCC complete with wonderful bat shaped brownies for desert. The evenings entertainment was the auction which was very entertaining. Dave also kept us entertained as he had a whole new set of balls to play with. He and others demonstrated their juggling technique with the glowing led orbs.

The next day everyone headed out for various caving trips. Our group was snookered though as Ron found shortly after starting his descent that there was bad air present. Good thing I had remembered to bring along my trusty bad air detector, the good ol reliable bic lighter, or we might have descended right into a layer of CO2. As it was we enjoyed a nice short hike in the hills and then called it a day. Another good weekend in the Mother lode.
